The leaves around Hetzel Pond behind my house are changing in earnest, the mornings are crisp as I walk to Liturgy, and the sky above the monastery has that unique autumnal blue. Last weekend my family enjoyed our annual outing to Ritter's Orchard to walk through the corn maze and pick up some delicious cider donuts. In other words, it's Fall and that means calendar season, our bookstore's busiest time of the year.
The monastery brotherhood has put together a beautiful calendar, featuring photographs from the monastery and inspiring quotes on prayer. You are going to love it!
To better accommodate the unexpected demand for our Pocket Planner that we saw last year, we printed more this season featuring a lovely cover from the collection of St. Petersburg's Hermitage Museum.
We also have several other exciting new items that make perfect gifts, including a Christmas Blend coffee and Burning Bush Dark Chocolate Bars.
These and other items will be available for pre-order on October 1. We are anticipating similar delays in the postal service that we experienced last year, so we are trying to make it possible to do holiday shopping before the post-Black Friday rush.
In other news:
I just received word from our printer that they expect The Cross of Loneliness to be ready for shipment by next week. There was a delay due to the cloth that we had originally chosen being unavailable. We hope to start fulfilling pre-orders by October 15.
Another shipment of our ever-popular Orthodox Christian Prayers is expected in the next few days. This is, I believe, our eighth printing in a matter of two years. A companion volume is in the works!
The Service Book for the Faithful is finished and ready to ship from the printer. We expect to be able to start fulfilling preorders by October 15. This has also been a very popular title and we have sold nearly half the printing already! We are starting the process of having a second printing made.
A couple of other titles are in various stages of production:
Many have asked about a Psalter. Yes, we are in the final stages of compiling and editing the manuscript. This has been a joint project conducted between STM and SVS Press. Fr. Ignatius Green (the managing editor of SVS Press) and Hieromonk Herman of STM have been working together to produce a translation that is at once new and familiar, adopting whenever possible the words and sentence structure already in use, liturgically. A final draft is currently being reviewed by a panel of scholars and specialists. We hope to have a final manuscript by the end of this year and a published edition by Lent, 2022. Once this is complete, several publications that rely on the Psalter will be undertaken: a new set of Holy Week books and a Horologion.
The North American Thebaid, a photographic travelogue by Ralph Sidway is starting to come together. John the Damascene, the first English translation of Alexei Tolstoy's epic poem, has received a first edit and is being typeset. White Lilies, the poems and writings of Valeriu Gafencu, who died in a Romanian communist prison, has been typeset and is being proofread. The two latter titles will likely be out before Christmas.
And just like that, another year has passed! It is hard to believe that I have been serving in the role of managing editor for going on four years now.
We wish the abundance of God's blessing to you and your families this holiday season. Please know that you are daily in our prayers at the Divine Liturgy.
In our Lord,
Priest Mikel Hill
