Though living in the 7th and 8th centuries respectively, St. Maximos the Confessor and St. John of Damascus still stand with the foremost fathers of the Church. Their theological insights, coming at the very close of the Christological controversies, help sharpen our vision of what our Holy Faith is, and what this Faith entails, each of them standing seemingly alone against the tide of popular theological opinion. This book brings to the English reader for the first time two of their key texts touching the question of the Divine and human wills in the Incarnation, St. Maximos’s first Opusculum, and St. John’s On the Two Wills in Christ, which worked off of St. Maximos’s earlier work. Dr. Justin Gohl (St. Tikhon's Orthodox Theological Seminary; Reformed Episcopal Seminary) has given us excellent introductions to the questions these works touch, each followed by the translations with the original Greek text on facing pages (with the main Greek variations translated together within the text). Dr. Gohl first tackles St. John of Damascus, then does the same with St. Maximus’s opusculum. While closely mapping the Greek, trying to bring out for the English reader each author's idiom and nuance, Dr. Gohl does not give a wooden translation, but one accessible and readable for the interested student of the Faith.
<a:text textemphasis="true"></a:text>

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0009/2212/4346/files/FullSizeRender_30a6cc0f-2e3e-46aa-bece-534b78e3e73a.jpg?v=1789584373
