St. Herman Studios icon of St Matushka Olga of Alaska was born in 1916 into a family of the Yupik tribe in a tiny village in Alaska named Kwethluk. She would spend her entire life there, living off the land, hunting, fishing, and gathering food. She would go on to marry her husband Nicolai who would go on to become priest for their village.
St Olga was a mother to 8 children and countless spiritual children. She worked as a midwife in Kwethluk, sewing priest's vestments and baking prosfora for the Divine Liturgy. She remembered to have foresight into knowing when the women of her village were pregnant. She was known to help victims of sexual and physical abuse and would offer them any help they needed. She fell asleep in the Lord in 1979 as the result of battle with cancer. Since her repose she as appeared in dreams of people who have needed healing. Especially women who are victims of physical and sexual abuse. St Matushka OIga's story is an incredible reminder to Orthodox Christians that we are all called to be Saints and that anyone, even in the smallest of towns can become a Saint. St Matushka Olga pray unto Christ for us!
