Very Approachable Wisdom of St John Chrysostom

Sing to Your Soul Vol 3 (and the previous volumes) are a wonderful way to read the amazing wisdom of St John Chrysostom. Firstly, Dr Ford has taken bits of various homilies and organized them by theme/topic, so if you're looking for "what St John Chrysostom said about (insert topic), it's easy to find, and if you're interested in reading the rest of a given homilt Dr Ford provides references so you know where to look. Secondly, there are a lot of writings of the Fathers out there that have been translated to English by Protestants and Roman Catholics. While this does not necessarily change the actual words being used, without the context of the Orthodox Church, a translator is limited and constricted by the lexicon definition of a given word or phrase, where an Orthodox Christian immersed in the tradition of the Church might be able to pick up subtlety and nuance and references (for example, biblical uses of words that might have a different meaning in pagan literature but that were used consistently in a specific way by St Paul or St John). Chrysostom can be heavy reading but these volumes make his wonderful golden words very approachable to anyone.

Perfect for devotional reading on the go!

This book falls in an ancient and venerable tradition of books of spiritual excerpts to be used for devotional reading, and in that tradition it stands out (with its companion volumes) as particularly excellent. The readings are short, making it easy to read a little here or there through a busy schedule, or to focus and read several at once. In addition, unlike many examples of this genre, the sources of the quotes are labelled, so if one wants to see the bigger picture from which the quotes were drawn, it's a simple matter of reference. Dr. Ford's eye for the particularly Chrysostomian virtue of "usefulness" is in full display in the selections. I regularly gift this volume to young families, and the whole set to friends and family.
