Description

A joint publication of St Vladimir's Seminary Press and St Tikhon's Monastery Press.

Nearly ten years in the making, this liturgical translation of the Psalter is the result of a collaborative effort between translators, editors, scholars, church musicians, and the communities of St Vladimir's Seminary and St Tikhon's Monastery. The goal for this project was to find a translational register that was both accurate to the original and, at the same time, felt familiar within the liturgical context in which it would be read and sung. Though grounded in a fresh translation from the original Greek Septuagint—that is, not simply a re-working of an existing English text—this translation aligns whenever possible with the existing monuments of English translations of the Psalms.

In addition to the Psalms, divided into their twenty kathismas, The Holy Psalter also includes many additional resources including: selected texts from the Holy Fathers on the Psalms, the Biblical Canticles, various hymns and prayers to accompany the reading of the Psalter, a list of Psalms according to theme, and a separate composite for the Six Psalms.

Smyth sewn and cloth bound, the book measures 6" x 9"

A True Translation of the Septuagint Psalter

I've read almost half of the Psalms in this Psalter thus far, and have looked at roughly a dozen difficult to translate idioms in certain Psalms. This Psalter reads extremely well, and has some of the best translations for these difficult to translate idioms that I've seen in any other Psalter or Bible translation. I'm also really impressed with how well it preserves the tense of the words used in the Septuagint-basis (Codex 43 from the Pantokrator Monastery on Mt Athos).

Thus, when you combine the quality of the translation with the fact that it comes with all of the Psalter-reading instructions, reading-plans, the accompanying Kathisma-specific Slavonic prayers, and commentary by many Church fathers, this Psalter is a must have.

Beautiful! STM/SVS absolutely knocked it out of the park with this one. Not only is this the most beautiful English translation of the psalms I have read, but this edition has STM's fantastic typesetting and is replete with plentiful notes and prayers to accompany the psalms. The best English-language Psalter bar none, and one that I hope will become the definitive version of the Anglophone world.
