The monastery was founded in 1905 by St. Tikhon, later Patriarch of Moscow and who died as a confessor for the faith in 1925. For over a century it has served as the heartbeat of the Orthodox Church in America, where the Divine Liturgy has been served daily since its founding. The bookstore has gradually expanded and now boasts a collection of several thousand titles from 30+ publishers.

The bookstore also offers items for personal devotion and liturgical use including candles, hand-made by the monastic brotherhood, wine, produced and bottled exclusively for the monastery, prayer ropes, icons, incense, and altar items. In 2014, the monastery acquired a small batch commercial coffee roaster. Burning Bush Coffee is a favorite of the students of St. Tikhon's Seminary and ships to customers across the country.
