Gallery Byzantiums icon medallion of Christ the King is loosely based on an image of Christ from the obverse side of a 7th century gold Solidus coin issued under the reign of Justinian II. Justinian II was the first emperor to put the likeness of Christ on coinage. On the reverse we have the Justinian cross, a cross form a 6th century liturgical plate, with ICXC NIKA (Jesus Christ Conquers) in the angles of each arm.
