In Ireland, village cemeteries had standing crosses eight to ten feet in height which towered above the graves below. The "Kilklispeen Cross" is a design replica of the pattern decorating the east side of the South Standing cross in the Kilklispeen cemetery, county Kilkenny, Ireland. The design is influenced by Byzantine decoraive motifs. The round projections at the center and on the arms of the cross symbolize the head, heart, hands and feet of the crucified Christ. This cross dates from the early tenth century.
