Great Vespers is the second volume in our library of Common Church Hymns, together with our popular Divine Liturgy
Great Vespers is the perfect companion for the church singer and/or choir director. It contains a complete anthology of hymns so that Vespers may be sung on any day of the year with little additional material. Likewise, the unique melody-bass notation allows any variety of singers to use the same score: from one soprano to a full mixed choir. For a full introduction to how the notation of our Common Book of Church Hymns works, please see this delightful video produced by Anastasia Kappanadze, director of Saint Tikhon's Monastery music residency program: https://sainttikhonsmusic.com/how-to-harmonize/
The musical selections contained in Great Vespers were chosen from the standard repertoire of the Slavic Obikhod for the sake of their familiarity. It seeks to represent what is commonly sung at Saint Tikhon's Monastery in particular and within the Orthodox Church in America in general. Moreover, since the monastery and the OCA has incorporated elements from the Byzantine and Carpatho-Rusyn musical traditions, these are also present in this volume. Please see the images below for a full review of the contents. The text has been carefully edited to be consistent with commonly known forms and with the newly published Holy Psalter.
The Common Book of Church Hymns is the first library of printed music to appear in English that attempts to rival the existing Slavonic obikhods both in terms of comprehensiveness and in terms of easy adaptability to small ensembles or solo chanters.
Smyth-sewn binding and high-quality cloth cover guarantees durability on the choir stand, even when laid flat.
